Thank you for playing! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

it stops completely when I die on the second level

I found the issue! seems like the death zone at the bottom of the level isn't covering all the sides properly.

I'll add an update later today addressing this. Thank you for letting me know!

If this happens again remember you can just respawn with E or Y on xbox controller.

Woah your are pro!

You can participate in my game jam: https://itch.io/jam/error-0xjam I would be very happy and otherwise good game I would like skins

Thank you! I'm not sure I can participate though I'm currently finishing some touches on the next update for Speed Square πŸ˜…

only one gripe with this game. The utter lack of intertia in this game. Im too used to at least some inertia so the lack of aerial inertia really throws of jump timing, because you dont really expect to stop dead in the middle of an arc because you stopped pressing the right arrow.

I'm glad you noticed it!

I removed it intentionally πŸ˜…

Good Rage Game! It has some coyote time which I like. The controls are good to play and react fast. You had on fullscreen? I was hoping for fullscreen

(1 edit) (+1)

Sadly the itch web version doesn't support Fullscreen yet. πŸ˜…

The download version has though!

so I'm making a precise 2d platformer so what's your advice? i found this and I thought I would get inspiration. btw I'm using unity if that changes your answers

ik coyote time is big but what else?

Awesome! I would love to play it when you publish it! I'm pretty new to making these kind of games tbh but heres a bit of what I've learned so far by playing other games.

  • Player inertia: I've noticed that most precision platformers have very low inertia when stopping/changing directions, depending on how slippery you want your game to be,  for speed I wanted that the player movement responds exactly to their inputs so they can make quick decisions and to promote precise landings.
  • Air control: I think this can be an interesting element to experiment with, how much you want the players to commit to a specific jump?
  • Hold jump button: The longer the player presses the jump button the higher the jump, this is very important for the precise feeling.
  • Feedback and juice: Every action the player does need some sort of audio visual feedback! make sure your main mechanics are satisfying to execute because that's what the player will be doing most of the time.
  • Level mechanics: Try to extract the most play of each mechanics in the levels. In speed I tried to mostly introduce new mechanics on each stage and start mixing them on further stages.
  • Watch the difficulty curve: this is something I'm not super happy with Speed, make sure the difficulty goes slowly up, let it peak and then drop it again, with this you can keep an engaging game rhythm.
  • Coyote time: You already know this!

This is some of the lessons I learned making Speed, I think these are engine agnostic too. I hope these are helpful, Good luck with your game!

how would you make the hold jump button if its on a computer? (its prob gonna be on steam)

I don't have access to my code rn I'll let you know in a couple of hours

ok thx

also, i js started unity so it'll prob not be out for like at least a year

All coins clear.

As a mentally unstable person, why are you bullying me every time I die?

This genuinely hurts my feelings.

(-1)

How is the game bullying you? like at all? no offense but if you get hurt by the little death messages, then you need to stop playing games. smh

(+1)

Congrats on finishing the game! And honestly, thanks for the feedback. It wasn't my intention to bully anyone, the messages are meant to take a cheeky jab at the player in the same energy as the try-hard games from the 2000s. I'm sorry if they make you feel uncomfortable. Would you mind answering a couple of follow-up questions?

  • Do you think a content warning would have helped?
  • Would it have stopped you from playing the game?
  • If there were a toggle to turn the death messages off would you use it?

Thanks again for taking the time to play Speed Squared and for commenting! Honest messages like these help me make the game better, and that's really important to me.

(+1)

Maybe I was too oversensitive, or maybe there are too much death messages in a game where you are expected to die a lot.

The messages might distract me from focusing the game, due to my low self-esteem. I should probably not take messages too seriously.

Maybe things like "Cringe" or "Lmao" would hurt, because they are making fun of me?

I don't think that much content warning is needed, just a short message like "this game gets cheeky when you die" would help.

(I wasn't expecting those messages, that's why I got even more shocked by those messages)

I'm sorry if I took your antics too far. Thanks for your friendly reply, hope you have a great game dev time.

speed cubed when

After I'm done with squared! lol

(+1)

So where is Speed^1?

(+1)

It was just a very fast line, not very engaging if you ask me.

(+1)

i got every coin but didnt even get anything from it :((

dissapointed. good game tho

Thank you for your commitment! I'm taking notes

(1 edit)

plays a little klunky but works well enough for what it’s trying to do. recommend checking out micro platformer on steam, really good minimalist precision platformer

thank you for the recommendation, I'll definitely check it out!

Out of all my 100 deaths in the first few stages, im disappointed in all of them :(

But I'm not disapointed in you, you can do it!

How do I get fullscreen on mac?

(1 edit)

Currently we're having issues with the fullscreen on itch.io  :(

You can also play Speed Squared on GX Games, and here the full screen mode should work on their website.
https://gx.games/games/vb9rtu/speed-squared/

Let me know if it works for you!

Fullscreen works on GX games just fine

Nice πŸ‘ It seems to be an issue with how itch displays the game /:

Great game! Loved the feel of the controls and all of the feedback, from the tilting quips on each death to the right amount of screen shake and instant respawn.

Also enjoyed how you played with level design, repeating levels with subtle changes to reframe them. Reminded me a lot of the enraging ultra difficult flash games of the early 2000s, like World's harderst game or This is the only level. Great work!

Dude! I'm very happy you liked the game, It means a lot! thank you for your words, this is very encouraging. πŸ™

World's hardest game and I wanna be the guy were strong references for me when I was a kid and I'm glad that you noticed that I tried to channel that here.

Nice game but can you make the cube in medium speed?

No, only squared speed lol

Great coyote time!

Thank you for noticing! I wanted the player to know that they can do that since the first stage with the positioning of certain coins, sounds like it worked(?)

movement is great, wish the spikes were different colors, i can't always see the dangers unless on full screen

huh didn't thought of that, maybe reducing the brightness of the background could help. Thanks for your feedback!

Hey there, I updated the game with a new background color for the first stage and the menu, let me know if that new contrast helps with the spikes visibility!

The movement of the player feels so good! And you can really feel when you've jumped and landed due to the great animations!

Ayyy Thanks! :D
